Fungi is basically the coolest. They grow everywhere and in many different forms. My favorite fungi are mushrooms (delicious and super cute!), but that's a post for another day! Today, I want to talk about lichen.
Lichen can grow on rocks and trees. Even though they look like a single plant, they are actually a community of fungi and algae growing together in harmony.
That's called symbiosis. :)
That means that two or more organisms work together to survive. The fungi keeps the algae from drying out too much, which means it can live in places it normally couldn't, like on a rock in the desert.
The algae lives inside the filaments, which is the body of the fungus, and uses photosynthesis to make food. Cyanobacteria can also grow inside fungi to create lichen. Pretty cool, right?
I love taking photos of the lichen that grows here in the desert, and I'm really proud of our lichen products! Check em out!
